Tax system of Oklahoma

Income Tax

Oklahoma has a progressive personal income tax; for 2024–2025, rates range from 0.25% to 4.75%. The tax is charged on wages, business income, investments, dividends, interest, and rental income.

Sales Tax

Oklahoma's base sales tax rate is 4.5%, to which municipal and county taxes are added. Depending on the region, the combined rate can reach up to 11.5%, making it one of the highest in the U.S. Sales tax applies to sales of most goods and a number of services, including equipment rentals, telecommunications, hotel stays, and certain professional services. Our firm provides services for obtaining a Sales Tax Certificate, setting up tax calculation and collection, preparing and filing the Sales and Use Tax Return, and advises on economic nexus, marketplace sales, and interstate commerce.

Property Tax

Property tax in Oklahoma is levied at the county and school district level. The average effective rate is about 0.83% of market value, which provides a moderate tax burden. Residential and commercial real estate are assessed annually, and taxes can change depending on decisions made by local authorities.

Business Taxes

Oklahoma imposes a Corporate Income Tax (CIT) on C-corporations at a rate of 4.0% on taxable income. For LLCs and S-corporations, pass-through treatment applies: profits are passed to the owners and taxed as personal income. In addition to the CIT, Oklahoma levies a Franchise Tax — an annual tax on corporations calculated based on the amount of capital, with a minimum of $25. All corporations and LLCs in Oklahoma are required to file an Annual Certificate (the equivalent of the Annual Report) with the Oklahoma Secretary of State. The due date is the anniversary of the company's registration each year. Late filing results in penalties and may lead to administrative dissolution. Our firm provides services for preparing the Annual Certificate, calculating and filing the Corporate Income Tax and Franchise Tax, business registration, and choosing the optimal tax structure.

Excise Taxes

Oklahoma levies excise taxes on alcohol, tobacco products, gasoline, diesel fuel, medical and recreational marijuana, car rentals, and other categories of goods and services.

Favorable Tax Conditions

Oklahoma offers moderate personal and corporate income tax rates, as well as one of the lowest property tax rates in the country. The Franchise Tax in Oklahoma is lower than in many other states. The state also provides tax incentives for manufacturing, research and development, and investment in rural and economically depressed areas.

Compared to Other States

Personal income tax is lower than in most states with progressive scales (for example, California and New York). Sales tax is one of the highest once local surcharges are factored in, and a Franchise Tax exists but is low. Property tax is one of the lowest in the country, and there is also no estate or gift tax. The moderate Corporate Income Tax rate of 4% is competitive compared with other states.
