Fractional CFO

A finance director, part-time

Bookkeeping tells you what already happened. A CFO helps you decide what to do next: how much cash you will have in three months, which lines of business make money, whether you can afford to hire or take on a loan.

What a fractional CFO does

A fractional CFO is a finance director who works with your business a few hours a month instead of full-time. A full-time CFO in the US costs six figures a year; most small businesses need the same expertise in a smaller dose. What's included: • Annual budget — a month-by-month plan of revenue and expenses that we then compare against actuals. • Cash flow forecast — see in advance which month may run short of cash for payroll, taxes or inventory. • Financial model — "what if" scenarios: a new hire, a second location, rising supplier prices, losing a major client. • Profitability analysis — by client, service, product or property. It often turns out that part of the work is done at a loss. • Key metrics (KPIs) — a short monthly report: revenue, margin, cash balance, receivables, months of runway. • Loan and investor readiness — financial statements and forecasts for a bank (including SBA loans) or an investor, plus answers to their questions about the numbers. • Tax-aware decisions — owner salary, S-Corp, retirement contributions and large purchases are decided with the tax effect in view, not after the fact. Everything rests on clean monthly bookkeeping. If it isn't there, we start with it: without accurate numbers any forecast is a guess. I don't manage investments or recommend securities — that is the job of licensed investment advisers.

How the work is structured

From the first call to a monthly rhythm.

1

Intro and diagnostics

We talk about the goals and pain points of the business, and you give me access to the books and bank statements. I check how ready the books are for analysis and propose a plan for the first 90 days.

2

Getting the numbers in order

If the books are behind or kept ad hoc, we fix that first: reconciliations, correct categories, reports by line of business. Without this, the next step is pointless.

3

Budget, model and forecast

We build the annual budget, the cash flow forecast and a financial model around your plans. You get a spreadsheet you understand and can update yourself.

4

Monthly rhythm

Every month: a KPI report, plan vs. actual, an updated forecast and a call to go over variances and decisions for the month ahead.

FAQ — fractional CFO

Common questions about a part-time finance director

A bookkeeper records the past: posts transactions, reconciles accounts, prepares reports and the basis for the tax return. A CFO works with the future: plans cash, runs scenarios, helps you decide on pricing, hiring, loans and expansion. A CFO relies on the bookkeeper's work, so the two services usually go together.
