How to check your tax refund status

The free IRS “Where's My Refund” tool shows your refund stage: return received, refund approved, money sent.

What you'll need to enter

  • SSN or ITIN
  • Filing status — the same as on your return
  • Exact whole-dollar refund amount
Where to find your refund amount on your return
  • Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR — Line 35a
  • Form 1040-PR, 1040-SS — Line 14a

Status updates once a day (usually overnight). Data appears about 24 hours after e-filing, or ~4 weeks after paper filing.

The US tax code is one of the largest and most frequently changing in the world. A small mistake gets expensive — and a good specialist usually saves more than they cost.
