Which filing status is right for you?
Filing status is the single most important decision before you file your 1040. The wrong choice can cost $1,000-$5,000 a year. This quiz finds the optimal status for your situation in 3 minutes.
TL;DR
The U.S. has 5 filing statuses:
• Single — unmarried, and you don't qualify for any of the other statuses
• Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) — spouses file together; usually the most beneficial choice for married couples
• Married Filing Separately (MFS) — spouses file separately; usually less favorable, but protects you from your spouse's tax problems
• Head of Household (HoH) — for unmarried or separately living taxpayers with children. The standard deduction is higher than Single
• Qualifying Surviving Spouse (QSS) — a surviving spouse with children; available for 2 years after the spouse's death
Each status results in a different tax, standard deduction, and set of available benefits. The quiz below will determine your optimal status.

What was your marital status on December 31 of last year?
Your status is determined as of the last day of the tax year. If you got married on December 31, you're considered married for the entire year.
FAQ — Filing Status
The top questions about filing status
Your filing status determines: 1) Your tax rates (for MFJ they're lower than for Single by $20K+ of income). 2) The size of your standard deduction (Single $15K, HoH $22.5K, MFJ/QSS $30K). 3) The availability of benefits: the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, Education Credits, and more. The wrong status can cost $1,000-$5,000 a year. For example, a single mother who files as Single instead of HoH loses $1,500-2,500 every year due to a higher tax and a smaller standard deduction.
